Company Visualizes Maritime Operations with a Radian Video Wall Controller System

BACKGROUND

A subsidiary of a prominent oil and gas company required advanced solutions to support their maritime operations. The control room aboard one of their vessels needed to display critical operational information such as submersible ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) data and other system outputs on screens in the vessel’s control room. ROVs are equipped with cameras and lighting to perform visual inspections of underwater structures, pipelines, and vessels. They can access areas that are too deep or dangerous for divers.

CHALLENGE

The customer faced significant technical challenges with their existing setup. The installation featured eight screens, all receiving inputs via physical HDMI connections. Multiple monitors were configured in a disorganized layout, the system could not display more than one system at a time on each monitor, and space within the vessel was limited, lacking efficient use of display real estate.

The new technology selected needed to be able to save space, and arrange and display multiple contents on one screen, with easy access and control over the displayed information.

SOLUTION

Black Box was tasked with upgrading the control room aboard the vessel, which is a unique installation setting for an oil extraction vessel. The ship’s control room already had screens but could only display organized content that was installed locally. Keeping the ship’s existing 8 screens, the customer added the Radian Video Wall Controller chassis, video graphic cards, and input cards to get information from the system via HDMI cables. Approximately four operators use the system, supported by a Freedom KM switch to glide and switch between screens via a single mouse, thereby reducing desktop clutter.

The customer is now able to display multiple systems and contents simultaneously on a single screen, save space and organize content more efficiently, and facilitate easier monitoring and control of critical information.

RESULTS

The installation of the Radian system met the customer’s requirements and exceeded their expectations. The ability to display multiple contents on one screen significantly improves situational awareness and operational efficiency. Combining the Radian system with the Freedom KM switch minimizes the number of keyboards and mice, freeing up valuable workspace. The customer was highly satisfied with the speed, reliability, and space-saving features of the solution.

The customer plans to equip other vessels with the same Radian Video Wall solutions, drawing upon the successful implementation aboard their current vessel to standardize and optimize operations across their fleet.
